One of the most popular plants in Sydney flower shops is the phalaenopsis orchid. Also known as moth orchids due to their distinctive blooms, these elegant plants are long lasting and can be easy to care for.
We are often asked how to care for them as some people have a difficult time keeping them alive, while others do it effortlessly. The key is to understand that phalaenopsis orchids’ natural environment are humid rainforests where they attach themselves to tree brunches protected from direct sunlight. Therefore, do not place your orchids in direct sunlight, or in front of an air conditioner.
Do not allow your orchids to sit in water as the roots will rot. Watering is best done by submerging the root system in water and letting it drip dry. Depending on the time of year, do this every week, or every two weeks in winter.
While a windowsill offering filtered light is the best place for your phalaenopsis orchid, be careful not to place it too close to the glass as it may get too cold for the plant in Sydney’s cooler months.
There seems to be two schools of thought about cutting the spikes after they finish bearing blooms for the season. Some experts recommend cutting the spike all the way down, while others tells us to trim it just above the nodes on the spike that have not turned brown yet. First option allows the plant to use all its energy to produce a stronger spike with bigger blooms, while second option produces blooms from existing spike which may be smaller.
Whichever option you choose, make sure that the root system is healthy: do not overwater and ensure that you use a top quality orchid mix and orchid fertilizer. Remember that the orchid would rather be hanging on a tree in a jungle than being squashed in your pot.
